Food and water on the road are a balancing act. A full stomach makes carsickness more likely, but dehydration and low energy are real risks on long trips. The right plan depends on the species, the trip length and your pet's health.
Dogs
- Before departure: A light meal a few hours before leaving, not a large meal right before.
- On the road: Water at every stop. Small meals at usual meal times on long trips, ideally at a stop, followed by a short rest before driving on.
- Signs of dehydration: Dry, tacky gums, sunken eyes, lethargy, reduced skin elasticity.
- Tip: Frozen water in a crate-mounted bowl provides slow-melting water without spills.
Cats
- Before departure: A small meal a few hours ahead.
- On the road: Cats often won't eat or drink while stressed. Offer water at stops. Wet food adds moisture. A cat that refuses all food for a long time, especially an overweight cat, needs attention, since cats shouldn't fast for extended periods.
Birds
- Offer water-rich fruits and vegetables during travel, since water dishes spill.
- Scatter usual seeds or pellets on the carrier floor.
- Offer water in a dish at stops.
Rabbits and guinea pigs
- Unlimited hay at all times, and leafy greens for moisture.
- Guinea pigs need a daily source of vitamin C.
- Watch for eating and droppings. A rabbit or guinea pig that stops eating needs attention quickly. See our rabbit travel guide.
Small rodents
- Water-rich snacks like cucumber, plus usual food.
- Water bottles often leak with motion, so offer water at stops.
Reptiles
- Most snakes shouldn't be fed for several days before travel, to prevent regurgitation.
- Many lizards also do better skipping a meal before a trip.
- Light misting or damp paper towels help with hydration for some species. Ask your reptile vet.
Medical diets
Pets with diabetes, kidney disease or other conditions may need strict feeding and medication schedules. Send precise written instructions and enough food and medication for delays.
Stick to the usual food
Switching food right before or during a trip can cause stomach upset. Keep the diet the same, and bring enough for the whole trip plus a couple of extra days.
