Yes, for most cross-border trips your pet must have a microchip — but the exact rules depend on where you're traveling:

• Going to the U.S.: All dogs must have an ISO-compliant microchip to enter the United States. Cats are not required to have one by U.S. customs, but your airline might still ask for it.
• Going to the European Union (EU): All pets must have an ISO-compliant microchip. Crucial rule: the microchip must be injected before or on the same day as their rabies vaccine.
• Going to Canada: A microchip is not required for personal pets coming from the U.S., but they must have a valid rabies certificate.

Pro tip: even if it isn't legally required for your destination, veterinarians strongly recommend microchipping your pet before any travel in case they get lost.
