Every fall, Canadian snowbirds pack up for Florida, Arizona, Texas and other warm places. Many bring their dogs and cats along. Others fly south and arrange for their pets to follow. Either way, a bit of planning makes the trip much smoother.
Paperwork for going south
- Dogs: Must be at least six months old, microchipped and have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. The receipt is valid for six months, which may not cover a full winter and the return, so check the dates. See our CDC guide.
- Cats: No CDC form is required, but carry the rabies certificate; some states require rabies vaccination.
- Other pets: Birds and reptiles have more complicated rules. Start early.
Paperwork for coming home
Dogs and cats three months and older need a valid rabies certificate to enter Canada. Make sure the vaccine won't expire while you're away. If it will, get a booster from a vet in the U.S. and keep the new certificate. See our article on CFIA rules.
Health while away
- Ask your vet about parasite prevention for your destination. Heartworm, fleas and ticks can be more active in southern states, and some areas have risks your pet hasn't met in Ontario.
- Find a local vet near where you'll stay before you need one.
- Take a copy of your pet's medical records.
Heat, even in winter
Florida and Arizona can be warm year-round. A dog used to Canadian winters may struggle with a warm day, especially if it's snub-nosed, senior or overweight.
The long drive
Toronto to Florida is roughly 2,000 km or more. For your pets, that means long hours in a crate. Plan rest stops, overnight stays and pet-friendly hotels in advance. Some snowbirds prefer to fly and have a transporter drive their pets, so the animals travel in a dedicated climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops.
Housing
Check the pet policies of your rental, condo or RV park. Some limit breeds, weight or the number of pets.
Book early
Snowbird season is busy for pet transporters, especially in October and November heading south, and in March and April heading north. Booking early gives you more date options.
