Pet owners comparing transport quotes often see wildly different numbers for the same trip. Some of that difference is real value, and some is hidden fees that only show up later. Here's what actually drives the cost of pet transport.
Distance and time
The biggest cost is the driver's time and the vehicle's running costs: fuel, maintenance, insurance and wear. Longer trips cost more, but not in a straight line. Many companies price by distance tiers, with a different rate for local, regional and long-haul trips.
Dedicated vs. shared
Dedicated trips cost more per trip, because you're paying for the whole vehicle and driver. Shared shuttles split the cost between many pets, but take longer. See our comparison of shared vs. dedicated transport.
Border crossings
Cross-border trips involve paperwork preparation, document checks and time at the port of entry, and sometimes customs broker fees. Most professional transporters charge a separate fee for this.
Timing
Pickups or drop-offs early in the morning, late at night or on weekends often cost extra.
Overnight stays
Long trips may require overnight boarding for pets and meals and lodging for the driver.
Airport drop-off
If a trip includes delivering a pet to an airline cargo facility, there's usually a fee for the extra time, check-in and paperwork.
Special handling
Some companies charge extra for things like smoking households (additional cleaning of the vehicle and equipment), very large dogs, multiple pets, or pets with medical needs.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Ask for an itemized quote listing every fee.
- Check what's included. Does the price include border fees, overnight stays and airport drop-off?
- Ask about deposits and cancellations.
