One of the most common questions we get is simply, "What actually happens on the trip?" It's a fair question. You're trusting someone with your pet for hours or days. Here's how a professionally run door-to-door trip works at 4Paws Movers.
Before pickup day
- Intake details. We collect your pet's species, breed, age, weight, temperament, feeding schedule, medications, vet contact and any quirks (like a dog who slips collars or a cat who hates men with hats).
- Paperwork check. For cross-border trips, we review the documents with you ahead of time.
- Route plan. We map the route, rest stops, emergency vets along the way and, for long trips, overnight arrangements.
- Vehicle prep. The vehicle is cleaned and disinfected, and climate control is tested.
At pickup
- Visual check. We look your pet over with you: energy, breathing, eyes, coat, any wounds. This protects both your pet and you.
- Microchip scan where relevant, so identity is confirmed.
- Belongings. Food, medications, leash, favourite blanket and documents are labelled and logged.
- Loading. Your pet goes into their crate or carrier, and it's secured in the vehicle so it can't slide or tip.
- Transfer of care. You sign off, and so do we. From here on, we're responsible.
On the road
- Climate control stays on whenever an animal is in the vehicle.
- Regular stops. Dogs get leashed potty breaks in safe, fenced or quiet areas. Carriers for cats, birds, small mammals and reptiles stay closed, and we check water, temperature and comfort.
- Updates. You get messages and photos at agreed points.
- The vehicle is never left alone with animals inside.
Border crossings
For cross-border trips, we present the documents, answer officers' questions and wait through inspection if one is required. Our cross-border page explains more.
Overnight stops
On long routes, pets stay with the driver or at an arranged boarding facility, depending on the trip and species. Overnight boarding is listed as a separate line on your quote so there are no surprises.
Arrival and handoff
- We check your pet over again with the receiving person.
- Belongings and documents are handed over.
- The receiving person signs the transfer-of-care record.
- We send you a final confirmation.
