Travel anxiety is one of the most common concerns we hear from pet owners. A pet that pants, paces, trembles, yowls or tries to escape isn't just uncomfortable; stress also affects digestion, body temperature regulation and immune function. The good news: there's a lot you can do.
Start early: desensitization
The most effective long-term approach is gradual exposure paired with good things:
- Let your pet explore the crate with treats (see our crate training plan).
- Sit in the parked car with your pet and give treats.
- Start the engine, then turn it off.
- Drive to the end of the street and back.
- Gradually increase trip length, ending somewhere enjoyable.
Go at your pet's pace. If they show stress, go back a step.
Environmental comfort
- Familiar smells: worn clothing, usual bedding.
- Covering part of the crate for cats, birds and small mammals.
- Calm, quiet vehicle, with the radio low or off.
- Comfortable temperature.
- Secure crate that doesn't slide.
Pheromones
Synthetic pheromone products for dogs and cats are designed to mimic calming natural signals. Some pets respond well. They're low-risk to try.
Exercise
A good walk or play session before departure helps many dogs rest during the trip.
Calming supplements and wraps
Some owners report benefit from calming supplements or pressure wraps. Evidence varies, so ask your vet and test them at home first.
Vet-prescribed medication
For pets with significant anxiety, a vet can prescribe medication for situational anxiety. This is different from heavy sedation, which carries real risks. See our article on sedation for travel. Always do a trial run at home.
What doesn't help
- Punishment for anxious behaviour. It increases fear.
- Forcing a panicking pet into a crate at the last minute.
- Excessive fussing. Calm, matter-of-fact handling works better than anxious reassurance.
Exotic pets
Birds, reptiles and small mammals show stress differently: feather plucking, hiding, freezing, refusing food. Minimal handling, a covered carrier and a stable temperature help most.
