"Zoonotic" diseases are infections that can spread between animals and people. Most pets are healthy, and the risk is low with good habits. But a pet transport driver may handle dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and small mammals in the same month, so hygiene has to be built into the routine.
Common examples
- Salmonella is commonly carried by reptiles (and sometimes other animals) without making them look sick. Public health agencies, including the CDC, advise washing hands after handling reptiles, their containers or anything in their environment.
- Psittacosis (parrot fever) is a bacterial infection that birds, especially parrots, can carry. It spreads mainly through dried droppings and dust.
- Ringworm is a fungal skin infection that can pass from cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and other animals to people.
- Bites and scratches can become infected. Cat bites in particular need prompt attention.
- Rabies is rare in pet dogs and cats in Canada and the U.S. thanks to vaccination, but it's the reason border rules and bite reporting exist.
Hygiene routines for drivers
- Hand washing or hand sanitizer after handling every animal, crate or carrier, and before eating.
- Gloves when handling reptiles, cleaning up after sick animals, or dealing with bodily fluids.
- Separate cleaning supplies for each animal's area.
- No eating in the animal area of the vehicle.
- Cover cuts on hands before handling animals.
- Masks when cleaning bird carriers or dusty bedding.
Vehicle cleaning between trips
- Remove all bedding, waste and debris.
- Clean surfaces with detergent, then disinfect with a product effective against common pet pathogens, following the label's contact time.
- Clean crates and carriers the same way, and let them dry fully.
- Ventilate the vehicle.
This isn't just about human health. Thorough cleaning also protects the next animal from illnesses like kennel cough, parvovirus and feline upper respiratory infections.
What owners can do
- Tell your transporter if your pet has been ill recently, has a skin condition, or is on antibiotics.
- Keep vaccinations up to date.
- Send your own clean bedding.
