Pet transport ads sometimes promise impressive speed: "Toronto to Florida in one day!" But a trip like that, with one driver, means cutting sleep or rest breaks. Fatigue is one of the most serious risks on the road, and in pet transport, the animals in the back have no say in it.
How fatigue affects driving
Road safety research has long linked drowsy driving with slower reaction times, poor judgment and "microsleeps" lasting a few seconds. At highway speed, a few seconds is a long way. Driving after being awake for very long periods has been compared to driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.
