Transporting Pets With Medical Needs: Medications, Special Diets and Monitoring

Many pets live with ongoing medical conditions and still travel safely. It just takes more planning and clear communication between you, your vet and your transporter.

Start with your vet

Ask:

• Is my pet fit for this trip?
• Should any medication doses or timing change for travel?
• What signs should the transporter watch for?
• When should they seek emergency care?
• Can you provide a written summary of my pet's condition and treatment?

Medications

• Pack enough for the trip plus several extra days.
• Original labelled containers with the pet's name, drug, dose and schedule.
• A written schedule with times (adjusted for time zones if relevant).
• Instructions for missed or vomited doses.
• Storage needs. Some medications, like insulin, need refrigeration. Tell your transporter so a cooler or fridge can be arranged.
• Supplies: syringes, pill pockets, sharps container.

Special diets

Send enough of the prescription or special diet for the whole trip and delays. Include clear feeding amounts and times. Don't switch foods before travel.

Monitoring

Your transporter should know what's normal for your pet and what isn't. Examples:

• Diabetic pets: Regular meals are essential with insulin. Know the signs of low blood sugar (weakness, wobbliness, trembling, seizures) and what to do.
• Pets with seizure disorders: Know what a seizure looks like for your pet, how long is too long, and when to go to an emergency vet.
• Heart conditions: Watch breathing rate and effort, and avoid heat.
• Post-surgery pets: Protect incisions, keep cones on, limit movement. Ask your vet whether travel should wait.

Emergency authorization

Give your transporter:

• Your vet's contact information
• Written authorization for emergency vet care
• A spending limit, or a way to reach you or a backup contact at all times

Choose ground travel when possible
