Even the best-planned trip can be delayed. Snowstorms close highways, heat waves make midday driving unwise, and border crossings can back up for hours. Here's how these delays affect pets, and how a professional plans for them.
Weather delays
- Winter storms can close highways or make driving dangerous. A responsible transporter stops rather than pushing on.
- Extreme heat may mean driving in the early morning and resting during the hottest part of the day.
- Airline embargoes. If part of the trip is by air, extreme temperatures can lead airlines to refuse or reschedule pets in cargo.
Border waits
Canada–U.S. crossings can see long lines, especially around holidays and long weekends and at the busiest crossings. Secondary inspections add more time. For pets, that means extra time in the vehicle.

- Checking wait times and choosing a crossing with shorter lines when practical.
- Timing the crossing to avoid peak periods when possible.
- Keeping climate control running throughout the wait.

Planning for delays
- Pack extra food, water, medication and bedding, at least two extra days' worth. See our packing list.
- Flexible delivery windows. If you're meeting your pet at the destination, allow some flexibility.
- Clear communication. A good transporter updates you promptly about any delay and the new timing.
- Backup overnight options identified along the route.
Costs

Safety comes first
A delay is frustrating, but a rushed trip through a storm or during a heat wave is far worse. A transporter who tells you "we're stopping for the night because of the weather" is doing their job.
